Why Work Here
Welcome to Hantzmon Wiebel, Central Virginia’s most established accounting firm. Critical to our success is our commitment to clients, community, and staff. Honored as an “outstanding corporate citizen” by the Charlottesville-Albemarle Chamber of Commerce, Hantzmon Wiebel develops leaders by focusing on continuous learning, innovation, and teamwork. In an environment of mutual respect, we support individual growth that is in concert with the highest standards of corporate ethics. We value competence and integrity and welcome career candidates who seek opportunity and challenge in the context of service to clients and community.
We enjoy working here because of our team culture and the quality of clients, many of whom have worked with us through generations of management and ownership. We benefit from a supportive environment, the counsel of more experienced mentors, and access to the latest technology. Our office is comfortable and family-oriented, and the atmosphere, relaxed, yet professional.
Commitment to education is a hallmark of the firm because ours is, at heart, an intellectual enterprise. Our conviction that learning continues throughout one’s life and career has lead us to invest in the education of our employees — present and future. During our 75th anniversary, the firm established a full scholarship at Piedmont Virginia Community College and two partial scholarships at the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia to benefit students pursuing careers in accounting. The firm placed the U.Va. scholarship in the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation, demonstrating our support for this important community asset. The firm also funds a faculty fellowship and a student scholarship at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA.
Reputation
For years, Virginia Business has identified Hantzmon Wiebel as one of the Top 20 CPA firms in Virginia in its annual List of Leaders. Also, Virginia Business recognized 13 Hantzmon Wiebel CPAs as “SUPER CPAs” in 9 categories of technical excellence (November 2008). Many of our CPAs are nominated for this honor annually by Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) members during the selection process.
The future of our firm is strong, and we intend to maintain our independence as a regional certified public accounting and consulting firm. Local ownership enables the owners/partners to maintain flexibility and control over the future of the firm and the quality of life of its staff members. The entrepreneurial spirit is very much a part of Hantzmon Wiebel’s culture, which benefits staff and clients alike. We encourage staff to sustain a strong ethic of “ownership”.
Training and Development
Technical excellence and staff training and development are also important. The firm assumes responsibility for sponsoring the professional development of our staff. In addition to requiring that professional staff earn 40 hours of Certified Professional Education each year, the firm also offers continuing education on tax issues, legal concerns, professional standards, software, and technical issues. Through these training initiatives, the firm attempts to blend the needs of the firm with the personal interests of our professionals. New staff members are assigned a liaison for up to 24 months and informal mentoring exists in many cases.
Real Life, Real Work, Real People
Some periods of work are busier than others, due to meeting various deadlines. These periods can be difficult for experienced personnel and stressful for new professionals; however, the partners are sensitive to these stresses and seek creative and practical ways to assist all Hantzmon Wiebel employees in achieving a healthy work/life balance.
Over the years, our employee turnover has been low. Generally, staff members leave the firm for personal reasons, such as relocation or family needs. Yes, we do sometimes lose great employees to clients — a great compliment!
People who work here, whether administrative support or professional specialists, come from different backgrounds and bring varying skills and experience. By virtue of the review processes that are a natural part of the work flow, we have constant interaction of less-experienced personnel with more-experienced personnel and interaction across department lines.
Benefits
Outside of the office, there’s interaction as well: we have fun together. The firm hosts various social events throughout the year, such as a holiday party, summer picnic, and an “after busy season” party. We even have a number of musically talented staff members that make up our band, “Out of Balance.” They perform at our annual summer picnic as well as other events. We sponsor teams for the MS150 Bike Tour, Charlottesville Men’s and Women’s Four Miler, Charlottesville Ten Miler, and the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, and our co-ed softball team competes in the local Parks and Recreation program. Everyone is invited to get involved.
Salaries are proportionate with experience. Benefits include paid time off, life insurance, AD&D insurance, long-term disability insurance, 401(k) plan with employer match, qualified profit sharing with discretionary employer contribution, wellness benefits, and a choice of excellent medical and dental insurance plans. We also offer flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts. We consider minimal travel to be an important benefit too, helping to provide work/life balance for our staff.
