Professional Staff
Promotions as of
October 1, 2007

Hantzmon Wiebel LLP is pleased to announce ten promotions for the professional staff.

Edward Schmitz, CPA, was promoted to the highly technical position of A&A Quality Control Manager. He has been with the firm since 2005, after being in a private position for fifteen years and public accounting for five years prior to that. He is a graduate of State University College, Fredonia, New York.

Gerri Carr, CPA and CVA, was promoted to Manager in the Tax Department. She works primarily with individuals and small businesses. Ms. Carr has a B.A. with Distinction from The University of Virginia and a B.S. with Honors from University of North Carolina, Charlotte. She has been with Hantzmon Wiebel since 2003, after eighteen years in a regional CPA firm. Ms. Carr is on the board of the Ivy Creek Foundation.

Kenny Deane, CPA, was promoted to Manager in the A&A Department. Mr. Deane has been with the firm since his graduation from James Madison University in 2001. In addition to being a CPA, he is a certified 2006 QuickBooks ™ ProAdvisor. In November 2006, Mr. Deane was recognized for being an outstanding “Young CPA” by Virginia Business Magazine.

Charlie Beckum, CPA, a graduate of Georgia Southern University with an M.S. in Accounting from the McIntire School of Commerce, The University of Virginia, has been promoted to Supervisor in the Tax Department. He deals with individuals and small businesses. Mr. Beckum has been with the firm since 1993.

Helene Downs, CPA, was promoted to Supervisor in the Tax Department. She specializes in tax work for individuals and trusts and estates. Ms. Downs has an A.B. from Princeton University. She is on the board and treasurer of the Piedmont Council of the Arts. Ms. Downs has been with the firm since 2001.

Travis Simpson, CPA, has been promoted to Supervisor in the A&A Department. He has been with the firm since graduating from James Madison University in 2002. His work is primarily with Not-for-Profit Organizations, Manufacturers, and Construction related entities.

Celia Lankford, CPA, has been promoted to Supervising Senior in the Tax Department, specializing in trusts and estates work. She is a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and has been with the firm in various positions since 1990. Ms. Lankford is on the board of The Oratorio Society of Charlottesville – Albemarle.

Shannon Hofer, CPA, a graduate of South Dakota State University who took an M.S. in Accounting from the McIntire School of Commerce at The University of Virginia, has been promoted to Senior Accountant in the Tax Department. He has been with the firm since 2004.

Jim Hutcherson, CPA, began with the firm as a summer intern in 2003, following his B.S. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He returned to Virginia Tech and graduated with an M.A.I.S. in 2004. Mr. Hutcherson was promoted to Senior Accountant in the Tax Department.

Cathy James, CPA, is also a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Ms. James has a B.S. in Business Cum Laude and a B.S. in Agriculture Cum Laude. She has been with the firm since 2005 and was promoted to Senior Accountant in the A&A Department.

Leadership Charlottesville: Kendra Stribling, Tax Manager, graduated from the program in May 2007. Edward Schmitz, an A&A Manager, will be in the next class. The firm is a strong supporter of the Chamber of Commerce and finds great value in the Leadership Charlottesville program.

March 2007 issue of Virginia Business Magazine, entitled “The List of Leaders,” recognized industry and professional leaders in the state. While Hantzmon Wiebel was 12th and upon removing the “Four” national firms and the regional firms that are not based in Virginia, Hantzmon Wiebel’s ranking translates to Sixth-Largest CPA firm based in Virginia. At the time of publication of the feature, the firm had 63 professionals.
 
ADDITIONS to the STAFF in 2007

JANUARY 2007

The firm was excited to recruit three December 2006 graduates who began work as Staff Accountants in January 2007. Matt Dean, who graduated from the University of Virginia at Wise, began working at Hantzmon Wiebel when he was at Piedmont Virginia Community College. It was like a homecoming for Matt to join the firm. Luke Barber received his Masters in Accounting from Syracuse University. He received his BSBA from Colorado State University. Carrie Davis received her Masters in Accounting from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia after receiving her BS in Commerce there.

JUNE 2007

Michael Jay, Ashley Atkins, and Caroline Crank joined the firm in mid-June. Michael Jay, CPA, has a B.S. in Finance from Virginia Tech and a Master’s in Accounting from George Washington University. He has five years’ experience as an auditor with the General Services Administration, Office of Inspector General. Ashley Atkins is a May 2007 graduate of James Madison University with a B.B.A., majoring in Accounting.
Caroline Crank is a May 2007 graduate of Longwood University with a B.S. in Business Administration, Concentration in Accounting.


JULY 2007

Marilla Showalter
and John Lauck, both of whom interned at the Firm in Summer 2006 following their May 2006 graduations from James Madison University, returned to James Madison for a fifth year of school. Both received Master of Accounting Degrees in May 2007 and began work full-time as Staff Accountants.

AUGUST 2007

Bill Pierce
has joined the Tax Department as a Supervisor, working in Trust and Estate Administration. He has a Trust Management Degree from Campbell University and has worked with several regional banks.

Donna Walker, who has been with Hantzmon Wiebel since 2000, moved into the position of Staff Associate for Trust and Estate Administration, following course work at Piedmont Virginia Community College.

Susan Kane joined the Administrative staff of the Tax Department. For several years she has worked during tax season for the firm.

SEPTEMBER 2007

Matt Varvaris, a James Madison graduate with a M.S. in Accounting from the McIntire School of Commerce at The University of Virginia, is a Staff Accountant in the A&A Department.

NOVEMBER 2007

Emiley Clayton,
an MBA student (concentration in Accounting) at Mary Washington University, is an intern in the A&A Department. She has a B.S. from the University of Arizona.

DECEMBER 2007

Pam Fitzgerald,
CPA, has joined the Tax Department as a supervising senior. A graduate of James Madison University, she has worked both in private industry positions and in local CPA firms. Belinda Jarrell is a new Senior Accountant in the A&A Department. She has a BBA, with a concentration in Accounting, from James Madison University.

Family Picnic The firm’s annual Family Picnic in mid-July was fun for all ages and appetites. The day began with a firm golf tournament and ended with entertainment from the firm’s own nine-piece band, “Out of Balance.”


Men’s Four Miler, December 1st: the Hantzmon Wiebel team had 14 members, comprised of both staff and family members. This is a fund raiser for Prostate Cancer programs at the UVa medical center.
