In 1928, R. G. Hantzmon worked in Washington,
D.C. for C.G. Van Emon, a professional accountant. To better
serve his Central Virginia clients, Mr. Van Emon opened a satellite
office in Charlottesville, which Mr. Hantzmon staffed a few days
each month. A year later, when the client base had grown significantly,
Mr. Hantzmon and his family moved to Charlottesville.
Soon after, Mr. Van Emon formed a partnership with
T. Coleman Andrews of Richmond. In 1931, that firm merged with the national firm of Pace,
Gore and McLaren. About 1933, Pace, Gore and McLaren dissolved, and
the Richmond, Charlottesville, and other Virginia offices, formed
T. Coleman Andrews & Co. This arrangement lasted until 1936 when
Mr. Hantzmon took over the Charlottesville office as a sole proprietor. The
firm began doing business as R. G. Hantzmon, Certified Public Accountant.
In 1951, Mr. Hantzmon
admitted Reuel Wiebel, Jr. and Clifford Beakes to partnership, and the firm’s
name changed to R. G. Hantzmon & Company. Five years later, Mr. Beakes
withdrew from the firm, and Mr. Hantzmon’s son, Van E. Hantzmon, entered
the firm. It was at this point that the company began using the name Hantzmon,
Wiebel & Company.
Hantzmon Wiebel is now comprised
of twelve partners and over seventy-five employees, making it
the largest public accounting firm in Central Virginia and
one of the fastest growing in the Commonwealth. Serving statewide, national,
and international clients, the firm prides itself on its time-honored
commitment to client and community service.
