Artifacts from all over the world and handmade wooden pieces adorn Mark Wheeler’s office and reflect his interests. Mark majored in history at Saint Lawrence College in Upstate New York and has traveled and lived all over the world.
His dad was a professor at Washington and Lee and specialized in international economics and accounting. His sabbaticals and teaching opportunities took the family to Malaysia and Vietnam. Mark has traveled all over Europe, Northern Africa and Central America. He’d next like to travel to Alaska and Antarctica.
Of course, his family comes first and he’s got two little ones who keep him busy. Robert is 6 years old and is “energetic, sweet and loves soccer.” Claire is 2 years old. “Claire’s the boss. She’s strong-willed,” says Mark.
Lindsay, Mark’s wife of 10 years, has her Ph.D. from Curry and works with the Center for Teaching Excellence at UVA. Her master’s is in chemistry and she works with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) teachers to help develop and utilize the best teaching mechanisms possible for STEM education.
Mark made the shift to accounting nearly 8 years ago, after completing his accounting coursework at JMU.
“I fought it for a while. Both of my parents were CPAs. I guess you can’t fight genetics,” says Mark. He says his favorite things about working here are the people and team atmosphere. He said the hardest aspect is finding balance but he enjoys the dynamic atmosphere of our busy season(s).
In his spare time, he and his family enjoy soccer, the pool, visiting the grandparents, hiking and biking. He likes to stay active and enjoys woodworking.
“It’s the process I enjoy. It’s called ‘sawdust therapy.’ It’s therapeutic to take a chisel to the wood and watch the ribbon of wood and wood chips fly all over the place. It’s very Zen,” says Mark.
Since he’s traveled extensively, he doesn’t have wanderlust, but he does hope to see the Northern Lights. For now, he’ll stick with kayaking on the James and Maury Rivers, playing rugby, hitting the gym and enjoying family time.
